POINT CLOUD REGISTRATION
Static laser scanners such as Leica ScanStation, RTC360 or Faro Focus output dizzying amount of spatial point data which comes from the instrument as individual point clouds corresponding to the setup locations in the field (scans). Each setup is independent from the rest and has its own coordinate system, elevation and orientation. Registration is a process of combining multiple setups into a single point cloud with all individual setups aligned to accurately represent field conditions.

Accurate registration will produce a clean point cloud with well defined surfaces and features that is easy to process for drafting, modeling or analysis. Inaccurate or erroneous registration may include misaligned scans that make it hard to make out site geometry or contain completely erroneous data. It is supremely important to register scan data in a way that produces accurate, verifiable resultant point cloud that will serve as the basis for all future plans and deliverables.

Scanning Support Services team has over 10 years experience producing scan data registrations ranging in size and complexity from only a handful of setups to several hundred scans. We utilize multiple registration methods including reference points such as spheres, paper targets and survey control, as well as cloud-to-cloud alignment algorithms to ensure best possible registration outcome. Each registration includes a detailed report outlining the constraints used, mean and maximum errors and more.
